Wireless Network Access (Including Broadband Internet Access)

As you probably know, you can now access our Broadband Internet even from your clinics. How can you get on board?

Well, before you plunk your money down for a wireless network card, get a hold of another member who already has a wireless card in his notebook and get him to try to access the Internet in your own clinic room. If he is successful, you're in luck and may carry on to get your own wireless card.

If the signal is very poor, or worse yet, there isn't any signal, please inform me personally or by email and I'll try to get the hospital IT Department to do something about it. The system was set up by a vendor chosen by the hospital and so the hospital is in charge of it. I can't promise anything but I'll register your problem with them.

Next buy a wireless card. They are easily available from virtually any computer shop in town that sells computer accessories. Make sure you tell the sales representative your needs so that he may help you to choose the right model. For example, you should inform him whether you need it for your notebook, desktop or even both, what operating system you are using, whether you will be using it on your PDA (Palm or PPC), etc. There various types (PC Card, CF, PCI, and USB) so choose the one that best fits your needs.

 The card must be a,

  1. Wireless IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi) compatible network card

  2. With 128-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) compatibility.

Please ensure that you have installed it properly . You may use either a desktop PC or a laptop, IBM compatible, Macintosh or any other operating system your heart desires..

Please pass on your

  1. MAC number, and (NB: This is no longer needed as of 05 Aug 2003)

  2. email address

in a sealed envelope to Norlida or to me in my pigeon-hole. Only applications personally received (not by email) will be entertained.

What's next?

Once I have included your MAC no. in the Internet Gateway, you will be notified by email and you will then be able to log onto the network and the Internet. (As MAC Filtering is no longer in force as of 05 Aug 2003, you will be able to log on once you receive the WEP key.) But first, you may have to configure your card properly.

If you do not receive any feedback from me, Kok Wah, within two working days, please inform me by phone and I'll try to get you onto the network as soon as possible.
